What does Karavalli mean?
It means Land by the shore.
For the past 28 years 'Karavalli' has been catering to bangaloreans with its wide array of coastal Malabar cuisine.
I was lucky enough to be invited on Sunday to try their
'Malabar Mappila' breakfast.
I was simply stunned at its rich, varied taste and another suprise, it tastes home-made. Now that is a difficult objective to obtain. Not only that, it is perfect for health conscious folks as well.
Let me begin with the first dish I was served called

'Puttu and kadle curry'
Rice and coconut
Chick peas curry
The curry was very tangy and made of chick peas. This is to be eaten with a soft delectable puttu. Made of soft rice and covered with coconut. It just screams coastal. Perfect, filling and delicious.

-Mutta sirka and Kozhi varattiyathu
A yummy chicken curry, cooked in all the best flavours and marinated in masala to perfection.
This is served with a roti type Indian bread which is layered with egg in between. So thin that you won't even realise it, until you taste the egg in your mouth.

-Nei Pathiri and Erachi Varutharacha curry
This is a delicious and scrumptious mutton curry served along with a rice based puri looking dish.
This combination is heavenly especially if you are a mutton lover, like me. The mutton was well flavoured and cooked to perfection. I could eat this all day.

-Ottipoli and Mutta Masala
Another delectable egg based curry. Very tangy, with the right amount of masalas, the formula handed down  from many generations. Served with rice dosa. One of the rich traditional coastal dish, to be tried of you are an egg lover.

-Athishaya Pathiri
Now this was the surprise package. Malabar style crepe lasagna dish anyone? It was made of Maida layered with mince. Topped with cashews, the first time I had something like this.
Definitely not the last time though. It was scrumptious and perfectly soft, melted in my mouth.

-Thenga Patthil & Pachakkari stew & Patthil meen curry
How can coastal cuisine ever be complete without fish?
Having said that, I was served with the softest and most delicious, flavour filled sear fish curry. Along with this is a coconut based, dosa dish.
The coconut stew served with vegetables was creamy and warm. Warm and inviting like a grandma's home. You know what I mean. Loved it.

-Chayaa and Pazham Porichathu
Sweet dish made of plantain  and flour deep fried in oil. Another first time for me, but certainly won't be the last. To be eaten with the suleimani chai which had a very middle eastern flavour to it.

-Mutta mala, a sweet dish made completely of egg.
The white used to make a critter looking dish, especially made for events or special guests. The yolk is used to make lacy necklaces around the white, hence the name mala.
Very well made and healthy egg dish. Another winner.
